UPDATE 2/15/17:It’s been about a year and a half of HEAVY use of this, for business purposes. No problems. It runs an average of 6-7 days/week about 8-12hrs a day.And knock on wood zero trouble with anything yet. That should speak volumes. There are lemons in a any product line, expensive or not, but this one’s been a gem.
4.5 stars out of 5.This computer packs a lot of guts for the price.Looks very nice, has an aluminum (looking) shell, black keys on silver face.It does what I need it to do and nothing else has the 5th generation i7 processor at this pricepoint PLUS HD screen PLUS backlit keypad. This is my 3rd Acer in 10 years. My first Acer laptop is still running, somewhere around 9 or 10 years old.Say what you want, but I think they are solid machines for their price.
This model comes with: -matte screen -HD 1080p resolution -backlit keypad (which toggles on or off) -5th generation Intel i7 5500U processor -8 GB RAM(capacity of 16 GB) -1 TB 5400rpm HDD -Dedicated graphics via NVIDIA GeForce 840M 2GB, PLUS Intel HD (each has its own settings) -6 cell, 7hr Li-ion battery -Removable, replaceable battery -Windows 8.1 (free upgrade to Windows 10 if you choose) -Dolby Home Theater sound -Two down-firing speakers located on the front-bottom, sound is less than ideal because of this orientation, but plenty loud -One 3.0 USB port and two 2.0 USB ports -Charger adapter cord -Charger jack on right side near hinge (aren’t they normally on the left?) -Multi-gesture mouse/trackpad, with pinch ‘n zoom and built in no-line R and L click buttons -Built-in 720p webcam -Some bloatware programs, mostly Acer branded stuff -Up/down left/right arrows on keypad also adjust your volume and screen brightness, respectively, with use of the Function ("Fn") key. This location is unique to Acer’s keyboard design and I love having those controls right where I know they are instead of having to scan up at the many F keys. -MIMO wireless antenna(s), whatever that is.Supposed to increase signal and speed. In my upstairs where I used to get 2-3 bars of wireless signal on my old laptop, I now get a full 4 bars on this one.
This computer does NOT come with: -DVD/CD optical drive -Any backup or install discs -No scrolling via mouse trackpad like some models had/have -No easy access panel to HDD and RAM on the bottom panel -Obviously no current updates, Windows Update has millions (it seems) of updates to download and hours and hours of installing and restarting. This is true of any new computer though.
I am happy with this purchase, I am not at all inclined to return the computer. The matte screen took a little getting used to, it puts a slightly softer hue on the colors, but they are still rich and it gets plenty bright, and it does limit much of the glare that glossy screens reflect. The sound isn’t as crisp as it could be due to the down-firing speakers located on the bottom of the computer.I find this very odd, since in my experience they’ve always been on top, up-firing.When I tip the computer back, the speakers sound much better when they fire straight at you.Oh well, you can’t have everything perfect or you’d pay nearly double.I read other users saying the keyboard has a hump in it, I do not notice this at all.If it actually does, it’s so minor I can’t see it.Perhaps certain ones had this and not others?I also read another reviewer saying the keys were weak, and that if you press one key down a couple other keys beside it would depress a little- again, this is not my experience. The keys are responsive, crisp and quiet. You could type in a library without bothering people. One thing I do notice is that the number lock seems to default to "off" every time I restart the computer, which is annoying.IMO number lock should always default to "on".The trackpad doesn’t have the ‘scroll’ feature on the R-side.On my previous Acer the tight R side had a swiper built in that allowed you to scroll up & down on pages like the wheel of a mouse, except with your finger obviously. This was addicting for many years and I really miss it.
I hope to have this computer a good 8-10 years as I’ve come to expect from Acer.

I intend to update this review when I’ve had some more time using the product, to see how it holds up.I bought a used version of this laptop from the Amazon Warehouse, because at <$400 for an i7 processor, dedicated graphics card, and getting to stick with Windows 8.1 over 10, I felt like I was getting a pretty sweet deal.Moving up from my most recent Samsung ATIV Book 2, this computer has noticeably better sound quality and volume, if it seems a little tinny at times (I’m not much of an audiophile so it’s not a huge sticking point for me).The build is pretty solid, though the screen is thin and easy to bend with the hand; I would never set anything much heavier than a hardback novel on top of it. Some other reviews have complained about the quality of the screen, but it appears to be a perfectly normal matte. No issues there.
The big problem with this machine is actually the trackpad software. From the moment I first turned it on, I was pretty shocked at how bad it felt.It is massively oversensitive, to the point that lifting your finger to click jerks the cursor several millimeters away from the thing you are trying to select.Something as simple as grabbing the hitbox for expanding or shaping a window is an exercise in patience, and the two-finger scroll only engages about 65% of the time you try to use it.There are also no Synaptics or Elantech settings available in the Control Panel so that you can attempt to fix any of these problems.Acer has instead decided that the the mouse and touchpad settings should be integrated into the Windows 8.1 Metro interface, where the customization options are extremely limited and none of them fix the problem. It is awful to use.
The good (?) news is that I found a workaround: Don’t use Windows.I was already planning on dual-booting this computer with Linux Mint and using Windows exclusively for moderate gaming and digital art, neither of which are trackpad-appropriate.When running Mint, the trackpad works fine and is comfortably responsive without being oversensitive.Two-finger scroll works exactly when you need it to and a terminal command even gets the drag lock working.I take my computer away from its desk frequently and use it for word processing without bringing the mouse, so having a good trackpad is a necessity for me.If it is for you too, avoid this model (possibly all Acer V-series computers running 8.1?) or get yourself a different OS.
I have a couple more weeks to decide if I want to keep the laptop or return it.I don’t know where else I’m going to be able to get these specs for the price, but the keyboard also seems to have a delay associated with the letter "i’, which I see most often in the word "point." Point point ponit point ponit ponit ponit.See?I swear it’s not me.
EDIT MARCH 2018: Have been using this machine for about five months now and felt I should make note here the position of the speakers, which point out the bottom. On a desk the computer gets good volume, but when placed on a soft surface (like your lap) sound is extremely muted.Worth considering.
I got this for around $650 4 months ago so i have had time to get use to it. If you are well versed is computers then you should know a i7 with a dedicated graphics chip is a steal at this price. The computer is completely made out of plastic, but it is a solid computer. The back lit keyboard is awesomely unexpected at this price, but its nice to have that option. The screen is just ok, it is full 1080p but the antiglare really diminishes the look. I did some gaming and it can handle midrange games no problem. If you are looking to play the latest games like BF4 then you could play it with all the settings on low. It doesn’t have a optical drive, but it does have a slot for one. If anyone knows the parts I need to put an ssd in that slot please reply. My one complaint is about the computers trackpad. There are no physical right or left click buttons The trackpad is one big button and you have to click on the left or right side to click or right click respectively. This makes it hard to browse because you can forget which side of the trackpad you are on if you are not always looking down at it. You should get a external mouse if you don’t want to be constantly annoyed with this trackpad. The pc is a little slow on boot up but all in all the computer is a steal at this price, very happy with it so far.

One of the best deals out there. I upgrade my hard drive to an SSD and runs applications like a boss. Good buy if you are looking for a work horse computer. I use it for graphic design applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator. I'm happy that I purchased this vs. an expensive apple macbook pro. Save so much money. I also had extra money to buy me a "27 external monitor!
So far, so good, no complaints. It came with Win 7 but I installed the free Win 10 upgrade with a clean install (vice trying to save old stuff) and it works fine.Very speedy wireless connection and love the touch screen.
love this product ive had now for about a month and its a awsome computer ive used it to play many games off steam and ive play world of warcraft and many other games all works well .
This tech is really excellent for the price. Able to run Fallout 4 and most games. NO OPTICAL DRIVE. The biggest issue was that Amazin Warehouse deals sent it to me with a broken screen, even though the caveat was simply described as damaged packaging.

Pros:
-Exactly what I was looking for in a laptop: --1080p screen in 15.6" size --i5 CPU --no additional GPU needed --more than 6GB ram --Touchscreen unnecessary --Ideally under $600 -I like the keyboard. The key presses are a bit heavy, but it registers everything I type.
Cons:
-The bloatware is unreal, including some malicious software. Ironically, the pre-loaded McAfee picks up some of the other pre-loaded bloatware as Trojan viruses. Great software bundling there, Acer. I've spent an hour uninstalling junk and I'm still not done. -1 star for this, it's that much of a pain.
Other thoughts:
-I would have preferred a ~240GB SSD to the 1TB HDD, but I can swap it out later myself. This (and losing the bloatware) would have made the laptop perfect, and kept the same price.
Overall I would recommend this laptop to a friend that requires a general purpose tool with good screen real estate without breaking the bank, and doesn't intend on any heavy gaming.
I received this laptop in January. I bought it via amazon. I've had it for 5 months at most at the time of writing this. This machine is truly disappointing. It has many bugs, but the worst one of all is that the Display freezes. Basically if you move the laptop even slightly, you get a whole bunch of lines on your screen as if it froze in the middle of some rendering. Only moving the screen or bumping it slightly gets it to work, if you're lucky. Sometimes I spend a minute moving the display around to get it to actually work. I have not dropped this computer or hit it against anything. I always carry it using my laptop bag. I'm guessing that something in the display became loose, but I don't how or why such a thing would happen.
This is by far the most annoying thing I've had to deal with. I will try to return this as soon as I can, as this is my work laptop and backing up my software and files will take time, as will sending it back and waiting for a replacement.
I'm disappointed with this laptop. Quality control seems to be lacking at Acer lately. I've only had this a month and now many of the keys on the keyboard are not working (not just one, but many). Also, very difficult to upgrade, not for novices. I had to take it completely apart and take out the motherboard to upgrade the memory and install a 7200rpm faster hard drive. It's a really nice laptop except for those issues. Now I'm in a foreign country on a remote island with a laptop with non-functioning keys and will have to deal with an International warranty claim. What a hassle!Come on Acer...this laptop has just made my life very difficult here.
Works well, and it is worth my $670 dollars. On the other hand, the screen is a little bit dark, however, it will not affect anything. I know the screen can not compare to Apple because it might cost nearly two times higher price than this one. I5 core is enough for daily uses, if you use I7 core, the computer will be really hot(mine computer with I5 core is also hot, though.) If you do not plan to play games like GTA, DOTA or even Final Fantasy, it could work well! P.S. if you want to play those games, Alienware might be the best choice, lol.

As far as hardware goes, this machine is great for the $599 price at the time of purchase.
ISSUES: Intel Graphics software - I was unable to play audio through HDMI with the installed graphics driver. Had to contact Acer support about the problem, for which they provided a link to an older version of the driver to fix the issue. Solved. Not a huge pain, but should not have been necessary.
Bloatware - Much of the pre-installed Acer software causes a drag on initial performance. Thankfully they are not required (had to Google the names to determine this), so they were quickly uninstalled.
Screen Resolution - I've never had anything higher than 1600x900 (on a 17" laptop), so going up to 1080p on a 15" was quite a strain on the eyes. Simple solution was to set my preference via Intel Graphics and restart the computer. All is well.
Clickpad - I am not a fan of trackpads with integrated mouse buttons inside. If my left finger is resting where the physical left button *would* be, I cannot two-finger-scroll with my right hand. Additionally, there seems to be a slight delay between setting your finger down to drag the cursor and when the cursor actually starts to move. So much for "Precision."
Audio - Because there is only one port for combined speakers/headphones & mic, they really should have included a separate mic for the webcam. Personally I don't have much use for the webcam at all, so I can deal with it.
No optical (CD/DVD) drive - External drives are pretty cheap.
These issues may seem like a lot, but I have found them to be only minor setbacks for a system with great specs for the price. Aside from the time involved with the graphics driver problem, everything else was relatively easy to overcome in my experience. While this laptop may not be designed for high settings on games, it gets the job done for intense browsing, streaming, Photoshop, and music production.
Very satisfied with my purchase. I bought this computer for work, I wanted a relatively cheap studentlaptop and I was quite surprised how efficient this machine turned out to be. for $560 it's a great deal.
PROS: -The HD 1080 screen is perfect for watching movies. -The sound is absolutely fantastic, I even stopped using my ear-buds inside. -Elegant aluminum cover. -the price. -Can handle some light gaming such as Skyrim and Counter strike GO. -The battery life; from 5 to 7 hours depending on how you use your computer.
CONS: -No DVD reader, I don't mind it personally but I could see how that might be a problem for some people. -Windows 8. it sure needs some getting used to. and I think it has so many useless things at can be annoying at times.
